Volume of a Cuboid – Example Calculations

Civil Guide

Volume of a Cuboid

The Volume of a cuboid formula is the total space that can fill this 3D shape. The cuboid has 6 faces/sides altogether.

Surface area of Rectangular Prism

All sides of the Prism are right angles, which makes the opposite faces of the cuboid equal.

In this shape, the length, width and height are all different, where each length is not the same (all sides are equal in a cube).

The volume of a cube is a3. The length of each side is a.

The length = a

The width = c

The height = b

Volume = Length x Breadth x Height (which is a*b*c).

Formula for volume of a Cuboid = a*b*c

Volume of a Cuboid Example 1

Volume of Cuboid Example 1

A rectangular water tank has a length of 400mm, height of 250mm and width of 100mm. Find the Volume of the water tank.

Solution:

The formula for volume of a cuboid is a*b*c

a = 400mm

b = 250mm

c = 100mm

The volume = (400*250*100)  = 10,000,000 mm3

This can also be written as 0.01 m3 (10,000,000 multiplied by 10-9 to convert from mm3 to m3).

Note – remember to check units when calculating the surface area.

A cuboid has a length of 50 cm, height of 60 cm and width of 6 cm. Find the Volume of the cuboid.

Solution:

The formula for volume of a cuboid is a*b*c.

a = 50 cm

b = 60 cm

c = 6 cm

The surface area = (50*60*6) = 18,000 cm3

This can also be written as 0.018 m3 (18,000 multiplied by 10-6 to convert from cm3 to m3).

Note – remember to check units when calculating the surface area.
